Food at the Hütte: Helvetia, W.Va.

Food at the Hütte: Helvetia, W.Va.

Last time we were back in West Virginia, we met up with our friends, Jonathan and Clara (Coat of Arms Post), to help film at the Swiss restaurant, the Hütte, in Helvetia. Jonathan and Clara have been working on a documentary project about Helvetia--Clara's hometown--for a while now. I'm excited to see what they come up with. Kerrin shot some sweet slow motion on the FS7 and flew his drone about...I collected audio and photos and explored the many books, photographs and artifacts in the tiny restaurant. If you haven't been to the Hütte to eat yet, go! It's delicious. Just imagine: homemade, fresh baked bread, mounds of swiss cheese and frothy hot chocolate. YUM.

Fall & Architecture in Montreal

Snapped some photos while wandering around drizzly Montreal--which, for the record, instantly became one of my favorite cities in North America. Are you looking for a super walkable city, with great food, awesome murals and alot of energy? Go to Montreal.

Today we made the beautiful drive from Tirana to Shkodër. We filmed at the castle this evening and are staying at Florian's Guesthouse, a lovely place that we are also featuring. Tomorrow we head to Theth to film with a mountain guide!

Day 1: Tirana, Albania

My first day in Tirana was fascinating. We were lucky enough to spend the morning with Iris Elezi, of the Albanian Cinema Project, who introduced us to Maks Velo, an artist who was punished and imprisoned for his work during the communist dictatorship. We were so fortunate to gain amazing insight into this country's history through Maks and Iris. The people we have met so far and very genuine and serious-mannered folk. There are still remnants of communism all around (including this pyramid, below), but the city is also searching for its new identity as a free market.

Albania was the first country to be declared an atheist state (under the dictatorship) but since the collapse in 1991, Christian and Muslim practices have returned.

We also spent time with the folks at Tirana Express and a cultural critic here. Tomorrow, we rent a car and head North to Shkodër for a few days.

Great news: food and drink is CHEAP!

Early this morning we took the ferry from Tarbert to Uig. We had a "proper" Scottish breakfast on the ferry. I had eggs, beans, mushrooms, potatoes and toast, while Kerrin opted for the six types of meat (including black pudding, YUCK) that they offered. Last night we stayed at this place, that I would definitely recommend if you are traveling through the Isle of Harris. Today, we explored the Isle of Skye and filmed the gorgeous work of artist, Julie Brook for Humanity. Isle of Skye Coast

I really can't even begin to explain the diversity of landscape we have been able to see in the past week. We have taken thousands of photos, videos and sounds and every corner we turn are tempted to collect more. Scotland is gorgeous but the highlands and western isles have my heart. This place is gorgeous. (Filming for Humanity). 6M0A6972a

We took a ferry over from Ullapool (awesome fishing town) to Stornoway today. We spent some time with the local bowling club (Kerrin even gave it a whirl) and then filmed at a local butcher shop about the island's famous "black pudding." (filming for humanity). 6M0A6593a 6M0A6600a

I'm happy to be filming with Kerrin Sheldon for Humanity through June 10 and will be posting a photo a day (or two) of my experiences through Scotland and Albania. Today we drove from Edinburgh to Forres but stopped along the way at several sites, including Dunnottar Castle.
